Chasing The Sun

Rooted in Place, Driven by Purpose

Chasing the Sun explores how architecture can be shaped by light, climate, and the everyday rituals of domestic life. Set within the dense urban fabric of Camden, the project reconsiders the role of natural daylight as a primary driver of spatial experience, environmental performance, and wellbeing.

The proposal is centred on a series of ceiling-integrated skylights, precisely oriented through solar analysis to capture daylight throughout the year. Rather than relying on artificial lighting, the architecture responds to the movement of the sun, bringing light deep into the home while reducing energy demand and strengthening the connection between occupants and the natural environment.

A carefully considered material palette, including photovoltaic solar glazing, thermally modified timber, and parametric self-shading panels, supports a passive environmental strategy that balances sustainability with warmth, comfort, and architectural quality.

Roofscape Development

The roofscape was developed through an iterative process of environmental analysis, digital modelling, and physical prototyping. Following detailed studies of the sun's path, a series of roof window configurations were modelled, 3D printed, and tested to evaluate how orientation, form, and placement influenced the quality of daylight within the building. This iterative workflow allowed design decisions to be informed by performance, resulting in a roofscape that balances environmental efficiency with architectural expression.
